Can We Finally Shut Al Sharpton Up?
Al Sharpton, that behemoth bag of hot air, who has single -handedly done more for racial division in this country, is at it again.
The New York Post featured a cartoon in their Wednesday edition depicting two police officers talking after just having shot a monkey. Holding a smoking gun, one officer states, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
Enter the Reverend Al. He finds this cartoon "offensive and divisive"...this coming from the man who makes race relations in this country so uncomfortable that people cannot even discuss it openly.
He continues, "One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."
"Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African-American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder are they inferring that a monkey wrote the last bill."
Whether they were referring to the fact that this stimulus bill is such an over-bloated pig and that a monkey could have done as good or a better job (see infinite monkey theorem), or the fact that those who wrote the Bill are in fact a bunch of monkeys (since Obama didn't write the bill he wouldn't be included), it seems that Sharpton is in fact the only one who sees this as a racial issue. What else is new?
Who exactly does Al Sharpton represent? His mouth is always going, so who is he speaking for? I still haven't figured it out, because if he would shut up long enough, and quit stirring crap up, we might just be able to examine race relations in this country, do something about it, and make any issues a thing of the past. With people like Sharpton screaming RACIST!! anytime there is the slightest chance something might be racist, there is no chance to deal with anything other than defending whether or not something is in fact racist. Having to always be on the defensive, or attempting to ignore the elephant in the room that is race relations, does nothing to solve the problem. It just guarantees that it will be swept under the rug for another 100 years. Yeah, that's a great idea, Al. But then again, it does guarantee you a lucrative job for the rest of your life. ..
Look, I will admit there are plenty of people white, black, and brown, who choose to see another race as something to fear, avoid, or hate. The ones who choose to hate, probably can't be changed, and no energy should go into trying to change them. They're relics of the past, and it's best just to allow them to wallow in their hate. But there are plenty of people who listen to Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson accusing everyone and their brother of being racist, even when there is nothing racist there. It causes the people who avoid race issues, or who self segregate to continue doing the same, and how does that help?
We have a black President now. He's going to be raked over the coals for poor or unpopular decisions. I don't give a damn what color he is, if he steps out of line, I'm going to call him on it, and if someone doesn't like it, tough. Calling someone racist anytime there is the slightest chance something said or written could be racist, indicates more racism in the accuser than the accused, so, can we finally shut Al Sharpton up?
UPDATE: Well, the New York Post caved, but only slightly, after hundreds of protestors with nothing better to do in life, mobilized outside the Post's Manhattan headquarters.
Issuing an apology "to those who were offended by the image," they still managed to stick it to the good reverend.
"However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.
"To them, no apology is due.
"Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else."
But let's face it, Sharpton doesn't actually strive for racial accord. When that happens, he will be out of a job. The proof is in the response to said apology, and the fact that it seems to have been directed at Sharpton. "At this point there will be no cancellation of the rally and though we think it is the right thing for them to apologize to those they offended, they seem to want to blame the offense on those of whom raised the issue, rather than take responsibility for what they did." Cue Spike Lee, who will be joining the reverend Al on his noble quest.
In the meantime, celebrity tabloid fodder John Meyer weighed in with his brilliant observation that the Post's decision to publish the cartoon was incredibly stupid. Do us all a favor John, stick with what you know; writing and performing crappy music and squiring Jennifer Anniston around Hollywood.
My take on the apology? I would have told them all to go scratch. It's time to put racial division behind us, and that blowhard Al Sharpton isn't doing anything to help. So once again, can we now shut Al Sharpton up? Please?
