Comparing Funeral Pyres to Oil Spills, Shame on you Obama
As I sipped from the the warm coffee mug in my friend's kitchen that morning, static came over the radio. We were so involved in our conversation we really didn't notice. The sky was a cornflower blue. The air was warm and the breeze was cool, the last days of a NYC summer had arrived. The kids had started school. The City was returning to the well known pattern of traffic. Yellow Buses, Yellow Taxis. New Yorkers always note traffic. When there is no school the roads are clear. School's in? Get ready for a commute. Many would say the commute, the kids, the traffic, the Yellow Buses kept them away.
The static was still there. There was the plumb of smoke. It unfolded South and West across the water, over our Island, over Staten Island and into Jersey. There were the first reports. A plane. An Accident. World Trade. Better Call Dom. Get home the answering machine is blinking, I press play.
8:22am:
"Hey Baby, just calling to tell Bobby to have a good day at school. Sorry I missed you guys, love ya. Bye"
Dom had just started as a Mechanic in Battery Park City. He was lucky enough to impress one of the Chiefs, who saw his potential and took him under his wing.
8:30am: "Erin. Are you home? Call me. I just wanted to see how Bobby's morning went."
8:49 am: "Jesus Christ, Erin....where the hell are you? A plane hit the North. We are going on the roof to see the damage to our building."
Call the Building. Can't talk to him right now. Call my Mother...what should I do? "Get Bobby out of school" Run up the block. Enter the school. Run up 2 flights. Knock on the door.
"Ms. Dato, I need to speak with you outside for a minute."
"Is everything ok, Ms Ruggeri?"
"Just come out side...."
A Teaching Assistant steps into the doorway as we are trying to exit, all the little faces staring up at us. She opens her mouth and the words fall out. "You didn't hear yet? About the Airplane that Hit---I cut her off. Firm voice "OUTSIDE" I tell her.
I begin. "Ms. Dato, A plane hit one of the Towers. I am taking Bobby home. Dominick works in Battery Park, I have messages from him but I have not spoken to him yet."
"What should I do?" She asks.
"Get the kids ready to go home"
Down the Stairs. I walk, he hops. I can smell the cafeteria. With Bobby's little hand in mine we approach the front doors. There are no windows to warn us of the line of parents who already snake around the block. As we push the heavy doors the silence is what gets you. Long faces and silence. Bobby wants to know what is happening. We get into the house I take off his book-bag, I get on my knees, look him in the eye and begin to tell him. As I searching for terms that a 4 year old could grasp the talking head on TV says "It's the 9'Clock hour" 2 minutes later, a Second Plane hits. This is no accident. This is on purpose. Someone is doing this to us. I look at my son. My little boy can read my face. He starts to cry, he wants to know why I am scared. Where is his Daddy? Dom was on the roof! Was he on the roof? Was he in the street? Where is he?

9:43am: The Pentagon is hit.
Phone rings. Static over the TV...."It's Mike...where is he? Tell him to get out of Manhattan"
"The other line is ringing, let me go" I say
"Dom! Please tell me you are Ok?" The thoughts are passing through my lips so fast they do not make sense to me. He cuts me off....
"I'm Ok. You have Bobby already? Good. I am on the Street. Erin... Do you hear that? They are jumping. These poor people are jumping. God help them...they are jumping...I....I...I'm with Joe. I am Ok. We are trying to get out of here. We have to clear the buildings. I Love you."
My family is coming to my house. All of us together. We need to be together in one spot. It's almost 10am

Our Ford Taurus Station Wagon was covered in dust as it pulls into the backyard parking space. He was coated. From head to toe, his Midnight Blue Engineer Uniform now looked gray. You could see the flecks of dust sitting on the Red Lettering of his name, Dominick. His thick, curly hair brown was white. The twinkle in his big chocolate brown eyes was gone. Gone. The nightmare was just beginning for him.
He would really only tell me once a few weeks later what happened. Fueled by Chivas on the Rocks, he let me know they were inside when the South Tower went down, the used the Security Desk to shield themselves. All the windows facing Liberty Street were blown into the building. They had to walk through the other buildings past the now crushed Bridge that once connected the World Financial Center with The Towers. Past the Winter Garden onto Vesey. He would tell me that during the commotion, before the Towers fell he saw a bunch of Firemen in the Bridge....he didn't know if they were still in the Bridge, crushed as he ran past it this time. He believes he saw them. He says he did
"What happened when you got on the street?" I ask.
"Joe and I were running up Vesey to get to Liberty. A Fireman came out of no where. Erin, I tell you he was as big as your Dad. He was waving his hands saying "Get back! Get Back! The North Tower is coming down!"
He would tell me how Joe the Chief, pushed him under a car and then laid across him, shielding Dom from the debris.
"After the Buildings fell...it was silent. I never heard it so silent, the City, you know?"
I didn't really know, I thought I did but I really didn't.
"We climbed out, stood up and then your heard them."
He pointed around the room. I pictured in my mind the dead end of Vesey and North End Avenue.
"From there and there and over there and there." Dom went on, his eyes not focusing on anything but on everything. His strong, sweet voice gently wavering.....
"What did you hear, Dom?" I asked him. I didn't understand what he meant. I didn't know what he was talking about.
"Their alarms." He said.
"Who's alarms? The cars?"
"The Fireman. They have alarms in their packs. I felt like they were surrounding me."
He would then say........"But they were gone. Just gone."
No, Mr. President, The Oil Spill does not have echos of 9/11. It just doesn't. The days that followed September 11th our Nation's Heart was broken. We cried in each others arms. People roamed the city searching for loved ones. Men and Women dug with their bare hands to search in the rubble. The smell. The smoke. The Rain. The Rain. More Digging. What September 11th was and what the Oil spill is are two very different things.
We were attacked on that morning, the morning with the Sky as blue as a cornflower, the air as warm as sunlight and the breeze as cool as the ocean. It was not an accident. As tragic as the loss of the 11 men on that rig is, it is not an echo of 9/11. Nothing is. Nothing ever will be. You cannot compare the two, not to invoke emotions in the American public. Shame on you.
Those minutes that President Bush sat, in classroom full of small children was Cool, Calm and Collected. The "cool, calm, and collected" you try to perpetrate, but fall short of. You have yet to prove yourself to the American People. Finger pointing and lack of communicating your way through issue after issue. With out shame you will now use this tragic accident to push through your agenda. Is this why you let it go for so long? Five minutes in a classroom got the prior Commander in Chief crucified. 56 days and you are just getting your act together. Arresting media and private citizens for taking pictures. Yelling at the Press for asking you questions you don't want to answer. Where is the leadership you promised? This is not about you "plugging the hole" It is about you standing on a pile with bullhorn in hand saying "I CAN HEAR YOU!"
Because obviously you can't or you won't. Which is it, Sir? We are waiting for an answer.
