It Takes One to Know One
Welcome to Yerington, Lyon County, Nevada. Population, about 3800. A quaint old mining town, which used to be called Pizen Switch, due to an establishment that sold some rather foul tasting liquor, which people likened to poison.
I'm a city girl, so I have to admit that some things folks living in a more rural setting enjoy may not appeal to me personally. However, Yerington has one annual event that sounds pretty amusing. Donkey Basketball. When I first heard about it, I admit I naively (and purely citified) thought, "How the hell are you going to get donkeys to play basketball?"
Ok, I confess. That was a completely blond moment (sorry Sharon). But I seriously couldn't imagine what they had planned. For those of you who live in a city and may not know of this charming custom, apparently the players (human) play basketball from the backs of the donkeys. Sounds hysterical, right?
Not according to PETA. (I refuse to give them a link on here, look it up if you would like)
"The donkeys used in these rough and abusive "games" are often denied proper exercise as they travel for months at a time in cramped, poorly ventilated enclosures. They regularly go without food and water before games in an effort to prevent unsightly "accidents." PETA receives many complaints about donkey basketball events, but it is up to administrators to do the right thing, as these animals are afforded no protection under the Animal Welfare Act."
"These events are loud, frantic, and completely unnatural to donkeys, who are forced to participate by being pulled, shoved, screamed at, or whipped when they don't want to play, in addition to carting riders who are heavier than the donkeys can comfortably carry. These events are exploitative for both animals and organizers, as donkey basketball operators often take at least half the profits."
Damn, I feel even more ridiculous now, because the only thing I know about donkeys are that there are different varieties, like mule, burro, ass, and that they're braying, stubborn, loud mouthed little bastards that like to kick you in the head for no reason. So I'm impressed with PETA's extensive knowledge about the emotions and behavior of these animals. But then I thought it through.
After all, it takes one ass to truly know another.

Five Finger Shoes
The marketed primary use for the Five Finger Shoes Trek is for off-road trail running. The tougher sole will suit many other uses where a thicker more protective sole is preferred.
